MUMBAI: Spice Digital, one of the leading VAS players in India in partnership with the Sangam Kala Group, a non-commercial cultural group has announced an annual National Singing Talent Hunt contest - Spice Surtarang.
Sub-juniors (5 to 12 years), juniors (12 to 18 years) and seniors (18 to 28 years) will be able to take part in The Spice Surtarang talent hunt across filmy and non-filmy categories.

The first round of auditions is through mobile phones. The participants can be a part of the audition by dialing 54321333, This service is LIVE across all major mobile operators including Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Tata.

Spice Digital Limited CEO Saket Agarwal said, “One of the biggest segments within the Mobile VAS business is the entertainment industry. Spice Digital has always recognised and supported fresh talent in the field of music. This association with Sangam Kala Group is our way of presenting opportunities to aspiring singers from across the country to showcase their talent by providing them access through the mobile radio platform that may not be possible otherwise.”

The participants who are short-listed by the mobile auditions process will gain entry into regional rounds held across the country, the winners of which would participate in the National round.
This hunt would provide a national platform to aspiring professional singers all over the country. In the past 36 years, the group has discovered gems such as Sonu Niigaam, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan who are currently dominating the Indian singing environment.  Their recent discoveries are Harshit, Abhaas, Vineet, Toshi and Ashpreet.

Endhiran songs rock: Read Endhiran music review!

Well, the mystery has begun to unravel. First, we were given stingy glimpses of the stills of the highly-anticipatedEndhiran. Right there, our imagination spread its limitless wings, encouraged by the flamboyance of the photographs. And now, it’s time to get a taste of the movie's music. Coming from A.R. Rahman, one is already set to listen to techno beats and snazzy rhythms. When the movie is titled Endhiran (which means Robot), we know there’s no room for the ordinary. Both expectations are thoroughly satisfied.
Produced by Sun Pictures, directed by Shankar, starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the songs of Endhiran are released under the Think Music label.

The album takes off with 'Pudhiya Manidha' in the voices of S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, A.R. Rahman and his daughter Khatija Rahman. In keeping with the futuristic theme of the movie' the opening notes are very techno. A robotic rendering of the first verse is followed by slow strong chanting ‘Pudhiya Manidha Boomiku Va’. The song goes on to sing the praise of the Robot and it’s sublimity. When the pace gradually picks up, SPB’s vocals overpower the others'.
The next song is 'Kadhal Anukkal', a poetic love song in the voices of Vijay Prakash and Shreya Ghoshal. The mellifluous opening guitar strumming is simple yet soul-stirring. This is a typical ARR melody of the 2000s with pacey beats in the background and a gentle melody in the foreground. The first musical interlude with the distinctive note of bagpipes has a soothing feel to it, but when the techno beats surface in the second interlude, we are reminded that we are still in the Endhiran album! Needless to say, Vijay and Shreya bring soul to the composition – they always do!
'Irumbilae Oru Idhayam' is the next number. The lyrics are quite touching and bring out ‘the Robot with emotions’ angle. ARR has sung the song himself, and as always, arouses our emotions with finesse. You can’t miss the female voice singing 'Super Sonic Super Star' from time to time in the background. Once she even calls him 'Robotic Hypnotic Super Star!' The song has a heavy dose of quirky English lyrics and to top it all , we have a medium-pace rap from Kash 'n' Krissy that kind of grows on you.

What follows the heavily westernized number is the theme music, titled 'Chitti Dance Showcase', a very techno, speedy theme. It starts off with few lines of rap in English and quickly converts into quick-paced classical notes sung to heavy western percussion, a very interesting piece repeated a few times in the composition. The song has a heavy dose of electric drums; when the drums fall silent, they are replaced by a serene violin orchestra with a divine harmony.
'Arima Arima' opens with the royal rhythm of drums, like it’s marking the entry of an Emperor, in this case, Endhiran. While the chorus chants his praises, calling him even the Silicon Singam, there is a tinge of pain in the voice of Sadhana Sargam. The thuds of the drums continue all through the number, with Endhiran sounding every bit the tough guy in the voice of Hariharan. This majestic composition has a shade of melancholy, bringing out the contrast in the psychological mindsets of the characters.

While all these songs have an obvious attachment to techno beats and futuristic rhythms, the next song 'Kilimanjaro' is completely removed from these moods. Tribal beats and tribal chanting persist throughout the number without the slightest mention of Endhiran or anything robotic throughout. The lyrics are on the sensual side. The sound of the drums overpowers all other instruments in this number sung by Javed Ali and Chinmayi.
'Boom Boom Robot-da' is the last number in the album. This fully techno, upbeat number (sung by Krithi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan and Tanvi Shah, interspersed with Tamil rap from Yogi B) is a mish-mash of fast techno sounds and a moderately pacey tune. The lyrics reiterate the greatness of the robot and the unimaginable avenues it opens up for the development of humanity.

Asif grabs lead role in Malayalam movie!

LAHORE – Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Asif will make his film debut with a Malayalam film, directed by renowned lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri, it was learnt here on Wednesday. The shooting of the movie titled “Mazhavillinnattamvare” (till the tip of the rainbow) is scheduled to begin in North Kerala in September.

According to an Indian news agency, the movie is also the directorial debut of Kaithapram, who has written hundreds of songs, winning several national and state awards.
“Asif is now busy playing cricket in England. He will be free by September to begin shooting in Kannur in north Kerala,” Kaithapram said.

“The film starts with Asif coming to a cricket camp in Kannur as a coach. When he travels from Lahore to Kerala, he has a personal mission too. The film will progress through his journey to his goal,” Kaithapram said. Besides direction, the story is also written by Kaithpram who will be doing the script and lyrics as well. There would be five songs and a ghazal, the mixing of which will be done in a theatre in London. The songs would be sung by top Indian singers like K J Yesudas, Udit Narayan, Sankar Mahadevan, K S Chitra, Deepankuran and Shreya Ghoshal. The film is being produced by a Sharjah-based entrepreneur M Mukundan, who hails from Kannur, under the banner of ‘Valluvankadavu Recreations’.

Life’s a song for Shreya!

At 26, she’s already one of the leading playback singers of the country and her four national awards prove that there’s no fluke in it. In the city for her first public concert, Shreya Ghoshal talks about her journey from a Bengali girl-next-door to Bollywood’s music sensation.

The singer who catapulted into the limelight when she won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest naturally favours reality shows. “These shows are not just talent hunts. They are TV programmes too and hence are packaged with masala and emotional content. While the SMS system may not necessarily recognise the most talented participant, the exposure with millions watching one performing on TV for so long is always there. A lot of contestants are doing concerts, if not singing in films or recording for private albums. Success comes to everyone who makes it to these TV shows,” she says.

Shreya feels that she has a long way to go and a lot more to achieve. “National awards are the most prestigious awards for an Indian artiste and I never expected to get them as I never sang for awards. I want to create ground-breaking music. People should remember me for my work.”

Shreya goes on to inform that she is toying with the idea of coming out with a non-film private album. “Every playback singer should do non-film songs or an album. The problem is that unlike earlier, there are very few non-film music producers these days. I think one has to devise a creative way to promote non-film music.”

She has, in fact, a day dedicated to her in the US state of Ohio and that puts her right next to Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore. “It was a surprise to be bestowed with the honour of June 26 being declared as Shreya Ghoshal Day in Ohio,” she says.

The singer made her debut in Tollywood with Nuvvemmaya Chesavo in Okkadu and says she’s loves the city for various reasons. “I’ve done plenty of Telugu songs and loved working with composers like Devi Sri Prasad, Radha Krishna and others. I also hope to meet one of my favourite composers, M.M. Keeravani. I also feel that the Hyderabadi audience make artistes feel loved. Also, I love Hyderabadi biryani!”

Singing away to glory !

It is good news for Hyderabad that their local boy Sreeram has done what no one has done before. This Indian Idol contestant has become the first ever contestant on any reality show to have recorded a song while still being on the show as a contender for the title that he may or may not win.
So impressed are the judges with this Telugu boy’s singing skills that Salim-Suleiman has already recorded a song with Sreeram and Shreya Ghoshal (also a winner of a singing reality show) for the Telugu film being made by Walt Disney. This love song will be picturised on the film's lead pair, Siddharth and Shruti Haasan.
What makes the achievement more important is that the show does not have much viewership in the South and hence the contestants hardly bag any votes.
But music has no language they say and talented singers are proving the adage right. Now that Sreeram has found favour with Salim, Annu Malik is bound to follow…

Princess of music makes her NZ debut !

One of the most celebrated playback singers of the Indian film industry will be in Auckland to present a sterling evening of melody, fun and entertainment.

Shreya Ghoshal, arguably the most resplendent singing star of the present-day cinema, will mark her debut under the ABC Entertainment (which has a record of quality shows including those featuring Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas) and Perfect Harmony Productions Private Limited banner at Telstra Clear Pacific Centre in Manukau City on August 20.

Shiv Prasad, another winner in the Sa Re Ga Ma series, Stand-up Comedian (more than six feet tall) Nitin Bhandarkar and a band of musicians will join her in presenting the concert.
Her ability to evoke the sentiments of the song sequence, bringing forth the vicissitudes of human emotions in her voice has seen Shreya’s meteoric rise in less than ten years. Beginning with Devdas, a colossal multi-starrer for which she rendered five songs, including Bairi Piya and Dola Re Dola, she has rendered hundreds of songs for almost all frontline music directors in the industry.

Ilayaraja, the first Asian composer to score a symphony for the Royal Philomornic Orchestra in London described her as “A Divine Gift to the modern world” and as “A talent so rare that it needs celebration.”
If Shreya was stunned at the stupendous calibre of the music director, she did not hide. She rendered a song with Illayaraja for debutant director Katha Thirmavalavan’s Tamil film Ajanthaa, stated to be the first film to be shot simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.

“I am very privileged to work with his Grand Master of Music. He composed nine songs for each version – that is a total of 36 tracks in one week. More than a music director, he is an institution,” she said.
Her list of films is long, and the scores are longer. But music buffs would say that some of her all-time hits should include Teri Ore (‘Singh is Kinng’), Mian Agar Kahoon (‘Om Shanti Om’), Salamm-E-Ishq (Title song), Ye Ishq Hai (‘Jab We Met’), Zoobi Zoobi (‘3 Idiots’), O My Love (‘Amanush’) and Un Perai Sollum (‘Angaadi Theru’ in Tamil).

As well as Hindi and Tamil, Her mellifluous voice has been heard in a number of other Indian languages including Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Punjabi.

Like her seniors in the business Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreyas’s forray into playback singing took the Sa Re Ga Ma (Pa) route. The popular Zee TV programme attracts thousands of aspirants from many parts of the world each year, adding to the treasure house of singers.

But it all began when Shreya saw a poster in Rawatbhata, near Kota in Rajasthan, where she was raised (her father is employed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), announcing a national level music competition in Delhi.

“I was just ten years old then (1994). For the first time, I stepped out to land in the competitive world. I did not win; I was of course sad, but convinced myself that I would try again. I went on to win the sub-junior title at the next competition,” she said in an interview last fortnight.

Shreya credit the late Kalyanji (of the Kalyanji-Anandji fame) for honing her musical prowess. Following her episode in Sa Re Ga Ma, the famous composer (he was a judge), taught her the nuances of music, despite his chronic ailment.

She recalls with gratitude his parting advice: “Don’t go with Show Business. You have talent. Pursue Saraswathi (Goddess of Learning), Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) will follow. If you pursue Lakshmi, Saraswathi will desert you.”

Has Shreya betrayed her master?
“Not at all,” she said, adding, “I never take on too much work, because then the purity of voice is lost. If you are stressed and disturbed, it will show in your singing. You have to be honest and sincere about your music, not anything else. You have to be in the water and not be drowned. If you get carried away, then you are gone.”
This 26-year-old says neither the fame nor the numerous honours that she has attained, including National Film Awards (4) and those of Filmfare (5), Filmfare South (2) International Indian Film Academy (4), Zee Cine (3) and Star Screen (3).

“My music is beyond films and a playback career. I would not be worried if I do not get a call. Experimentation today is only limited to finding exotic, new textures, voices and timber. Indian films will never say no to Indian melodies. I would say I have a good chance. Flavours might keep changing but the heart of Indian music is the same,” she said.

Ee Preethi Bandakshana – Preethiya Loka (Kannada)!

Hey guys, wassup? Here’s bringing a new track Ee
preethi bandakshana from the movie Preethiya Loka.
The track is just awesome! Speechless! The main leading
singers who are ruling on this track are none other than
Shreya ghoshal and Karthik. Music of this movie is given
by Sai kiran! Track is romantic! By the way guys, I don’t
understand kannada but I can feel it because it is sung by
shreya ghoshal with her tempting and honey soaked voice.
A romantic essence! Karthik has quite accompanied with
Shreya. Done a great job man!

Lyrics is given by Ravishankar Nag, Dhanajaya!
The mukhdas and antras are just authentic!

Would like to speak a bit description about the track.
The track starts with a guitar instrument which is quite
Popular. “aakhir mein yeh kannada track hain toh guitar
toh banta hai boss!!! Oops!!! A little masti!!! When shreya
sings at 2:48 the lyrics haaa…. is just mood ban jata hain!
The flute (banshi) music is very soft and touching! Track
runs for 4:51 “Ee preethi bandakshana” a very touching
and beautiful lyrics sung by shreya.

In my opinion I feel that the track Ee preethi bandakshana
is a bit same related to hindi movie track Chand chuppa badal
mein from the movie Hum dil de chuke sanam!

Jab music ki baat aayi toh instruments ko kaise bhoole?
 Flute, Guitar, Piano, Drums…
Track ends with a male singer Karthik!

Starcast is Vinay, Archana! Produced by Madhav Reddy and
directed by Nandan Prabhu!

“Sol pechu” from the movie “Thillalangadi” will

Movie Review:-
Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta is the title of the film though incongruously the lead protagonists happen to be Mr. Mehta and Mrs. Singh. First-timer Pravesh Bhardwaj’s direction keeps you as much puzzled as much as the intentional inversion in his film’s title.
With a painter protagonist going through artistic block, snail-paced tempo, self-styled aesthetic female nudity, circumstantially complicated human relationships and a climax so symbolic and subtle that you never comprehend when the end credits roll,  Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta meets all the requisite criteria of the alleged art-house cinema. Nothing wrong about it other than the fact that though the film expectedly runs out of entertainment, this one also fails to enlighten or even emotionally touch, move or bind you.
Artist Ashwin Mehta (Prashant Narayanan) paints his wife’s toenails more than he colours the canvas. Wife Sakhi Mehta (Lucy Hassan) is having an extramarital affair with Karan Singh (Naved Aslam). Karan’s wife Neera Singh (Aruna Shields) discovers her husband’s infidelity and seeks solace in Ashwin’s company. Though the adultery is openly evident since start, strangely both Ashwin and Neera never confront their respective partners and choose to have loyal illusions of their spouse.
Extensive footage of nudity seeps in the screenplay on the pretext that the artist can overcome his block by painting nude female form ala Leonardo DiCaprio in
Titanic or Randeep Hooda in Rang Rasiya . Surprisingly Neera initially shies away from posing nude despite the fact that she has been moving around naked in Ashwin’s warehouse for a major part of the film. And hold on... before your imagination runs wild, the fact remains that the continually censored blurs that ‘shields’ Aruna’s nude body will irritate you more than titillate.
Director Pravesh Bhardwaj spends liberal and lethargic screen-time in establishing the chemistry between Ashwin and Neera through corny conversations, transition songs and nude sketching which tends to get monotonous after a while. But when the relationships actually go crisscross and complicate in the concluding reels, Bhardwaj wraps up the narrative subtly and hastily without much clarity on the character correlations and conflicts, forcing you to do the guesswork.
With the film talking about Indian couples (with no notable NRI nuances) with
desivalues in Hindi language, the London setting makes absolutely no sense. Moreover with the outdoors restricted to some lame lanes of London, nothing distinctive is derived from the foreign setting either. And if he went ahead with a UK setting, one wonders why at all Bhardwaj opted to make the film in Hindi language? At least he could have spared Aruna Shields from struggling in her desi dialogue delivery and saved the audience from such illegitimate lousy lines like, “ Mera pati hamesha tumhari patni ko ghumata rehta hain, tumko bhi mujh par kharcha karna chahiye ” (My husband always takes your wife out, you should also spend on me).
Shujaat Hussain Khan’s
ghazal based soothing soundtrack goes unnoticed in this film. Surprisingly the background score sounds suspiciously similar to ‘ Aye Khuda ’ track from Paathshaala .
The performances are average and never rise above the lackluster script. Prashant Narayanan is capable of much better. Aruna Shields is passable but doesn’t have anything exceptional to display including her anatomy. Sadly, both the artist and the muse fail to amuse in this colourless cinema.
